On September 11th 1973, US-backed General Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected leader of Chile, Salvadore Allende. Pinochet ordered an air strike on the Presidential Palace, labor activists and famous folk guitarists were rounded up for torture, disappeared, and killed.
Pinochet converted the national football stadium into a detention facility like Guantanamo Bay. Chile’s economy was turned into a plantation for the 1%, as inequality and poverty skyrocketed under the imposed Milton Friedman-style economic model.
Over 40,000 Chileans became victims of Pinochet’s terror. In response, the Nixon administration committed more money, more training, more torture equipment.
The world didn’t begin on September 11th, 2001. Rather, for the first time in modern history, Americans were visited by the same violence the US has imposed since its creation.
In Chile, the US murdered tens of thousands and impoverished millions. This wasn’t America’s first foray in international terrorism, nor would it be the last.
The United States security state is a terrorist and a plague on the people of the world.
Let’s remember that USA did the same thing in Brazil, Argentina and other nations in South America. Brazil was pretty much the first South America country to have its president overthrown in the name of “American capitalist freedom”. The same excuse was used in other countries that had their democratic governments annihilated in the name of security of the American economic model.
Let’s remember that good part of dictatorships implanted in Latin America happened during the epic years of the Cold War. The truth is that the USA couldn’t allow another Cuba in the american continent. The USA government would do anything, even sending their ambassador to spy brazilian president (whom the USA believed to be a “threat to their interests” and a comunist) and create campaigns against the then president João Goulart.
Let’s remember the name of this ambassador: Lincoln Gordon. There are several evidences and documents that prove his participation in the manipulation of brazilian media to denigrate Goulart’s image.
Let’s remember that USA actually sent money to help the campaigns against the president, money enough to create an institution called IPES, whose campaigns led to mobilization of own population against the president. The IPES literally manipulated and convinced good part of brazilian population (the other part who couldn’t be manipulated were tortured and killed when the dictatorship was implanted).
Let’s remember that million people were tortured, killed and are still missed in all the countries who had their autonomies and democracies crushed because USA wanted so. As a brazilian myself I could only tell a little about brazilian dictatorship (that lasted more than two decades), but even shoter dictatorships like Argentina’s were equally or more violent than the brazilian.
So please, educate yourself. Search ‘O Dia que Durou Vinte Anos’ and learn more about the imperialist posture of the USA.
Yeah and I dont think people is forgetting about what you said but I guess its focused on Chile cos today is September 11th so …
